ARCA's association with NASCAR predates the sanctioning body itself. ARCA's found John Marcum, raced against and later worked as an official for Bill France, Sr., who founded NASCAR in 1949.

The first Daytona 500 provided many thrills, but perhaps most spectacular was the close finish, as Lee Petty (42) edged out Johnny Beauchamp.
